A Manager’s Guide to Improving Workplace Performance

Reading is fun. But not every book is really worth reading it – especially when it comes to business books. Therefore I already started the “Book of the Week” Series, where I share comprehensive abstracts on my favourite books.

Now I want to start another series called: “Business Books” – featuring information on books in a more compact way. Today I would like to present you “A Manager’s Guide to Improving Workplace Performance”, by Roger Chevalier (2007).

Synopsis
At one time or another, most managers have experienced dissatisfaction with their employees’ performance. Despite the strong temptation to fall prey to the assumption that poor performance is a result of unchangeable employee characteristics, managers need to realize that they do have the power to reverse negative performance trends and affect positive change in the workplace. A Manager’s Guide to Improving Workplace Performance provides a systematic framework for achieving such change.

In order to do so, managers need to become effective coaches, adjust their leadership style to meet employees’ needs, and develop individuals who function well together as a team. The second section of the book discusses identifying and removing barriers to performance. In order to recognize and address underperformance in the workplace, it is first necessary to measure employees’ baseline performance and identify the desired level of performance in measurable terms. The difference between the baseline performance and the desired performance is commonly referred to as the performance gap. Chevalier includes a Performance Analysis Worksheet that can be used to present and analyze the performance gap and its causes.

Using this tool, managers can begin to identify potential solutions to closing the performance gap. The final section of the book integrates the strategies taught in the first two sections. Although all of these strategies are useful in isolation, their effectiveness may increase exponentially when they are used in conjunction with one another. A Manager’s Guide to Workplace Performance contains numerous case studies, application exercises, and worksheets intended to extend the concepts presented. Well-written and practical in its focus, this book is a must-read for managers seeking a detailed framework for improving workplace effectiveness.
